Department/Division Purpose (brief description of main function):

The TRIO Student Support Services program (a federal grant funded program) at Pueblo Community College provides academic support and assistance to facilitate persistence towards graduation for 220 students from low-income, first-generation backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Services include proactive academic advising, tutoring, career counseling, financial advising, and success coaching. Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period.  Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.

This position specifically exist to support the TRIO Student Support Services program and its student participants. This individual will provide academic advising and transfer services to new, pre-health, undeclared, military students, as well as students that are part of special programs. The Transfer Coach interacts significantly with academic departments to provide guidance and directly supports the mission of the department, division, and college.  Additionally, the Transfer Coach subscribes to the philosophy of a team approach to proactive, intrusive advising and teaching, where student progress is the main priority. This philosophy involves a relationship management approach in working with all academic and non-academic departments involved in the student development efforts of the college. The Transfer Coach reports directly to the Director.  

Necessary Special Requirements:
To successfully fulfill the essential functions of the position, the incumbent is required to have a valid Colorado driver’s license to transport students to campus tours and/or other off-campus events.  The position also requires a flexible work schedule to provide student life programming and college events after regular business hours and on weekends.   Candidates for this position must be willing to meet these required hours in order to be considered for the position.

 

Job Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for initiating and coordinating the student advising process for all new and continuing students.   Provides thorough academic advising services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program of study by helping students to prepare an Educational Pathway and assist them to become engaged in the educational environment.  Reviews and interprets academic skills and assessment to determine appropriate course placement.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with four-year institutions of higher education admission and transfer representatives, including monitoring transfer articulation agreements at these institutions.   Plans, implements, and attends campus tours to four-year institutions of higher education for interested program participants, oversees tour promotion, transportation arrangements, and on-site coordination.   Assists student participants in completing all requirements for admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and TRIO Student Support Services program applications to four-year institutions of higher education.  Develops and conducts activities to ensure participants are prepared for the transition from PCC to a four-year college environment.
  • Monitors student academic progress and intervenes with students in academic jeopardy by assisting them to make appropriate decisions and persist toward their academic goals.  Identifies and coordinates appropriate on-campus, online, and community resources to assist students with non-academic challenges.   Establishes and maintains communication with instructors.
  • Collaborates with department personnel to recruit, interview, evaluate, and select students for entrance into the program.  This includes preparation of all academic documentation from the Banner Student Information System, analysis, and certification of this information to help determine the student’s eligibility for entrance into the program.
  • Develops and leads workshops, programs to enhance advising, retention, and transfer initiatives for the TRIO SSS program.  Coordinates and provides programming in financial literacy, transfer assistance, career exploration and preparation, student success workshops, and academic, cultural, and career enrichment activities.
  • Establishes and maintains an on-going positive relationship with faculty, Department Chairs, Division Deans, and staff on related advising activities, policies, procedures, and updates within their respective department/divisions.
  • Participates with other staff members in the planning, implementation, and assessment of advising goals, strategies, and development of the strategic plan.
  • Implements and supports the TRIO SSS retention program that provides the necessary resources to foster student ability to achieve academic persistence and success.
  • Provides students with career and educational pathway information.  Assists students with exploring career options and preparing for the workforce.
  • Documents all services provided in the Student Access database system.  Completes requested reports that include statistics on services provided and maintains printed advising materials.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Serves on college committees.
  • Attends PCC and department meetings, as directed.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
