Department/Division Purpose (brief description of main function):

The purpose of the Division of Medical & Behavioral health is to provide the educational needs of and academic support services for Pueblo community College students and our diverse communities, and to ensure student success by offering quality, comprehensive educational opportunities. The Division of Medical & Behavioral Health supports both the transfer and program functions of the college.

Job Summary Statement (brief summary of overall responsibility of position):

The faculty department chair is responsible for organizing the delivery of the behavioral health program. In addition, the department chair will assist in the administration and coordination of activities assigned by the division dean and will provide department leadership to faculty and staff.
A faculty department chair holds an appointment as a full-time faculty member in the behavioral health program.
The department chair will promote excellence in department programs at Pueblo Community College, and will support the college’s Mission, Vision and Values.
In addition to performing the duties assigned to full-time faculty at PCC, a department chair serves to provide leadership and administration to an academic department. Responsibilities include: department leadership, program review and planning, curriculum management, assessment activities, student advisement, evaluation and supervision of academic departmental staff, recruitment and mentoring of qualified instructional staff.
Department Chairs must adhere to the laws, policies, procedures, rules, and applications that govern and affect the college, including the fiscal rules of the State of Colorado.
Absences will be minimal and only for appropriate cause; notification of supervisor is required.  Faculty must provide coverage or obtain approval for class cancellation according to PCC policy.  Two personal days per year are available with approval.  Refer to PCC Operational Procedures and Protocols for further information.
Department Chairs are expected to model professionalism in dress, action, and communication.  Accordingly, Department Chairs are obliged to respond professionally to constructive feedback and to follow the chain of command in resolving conflicts.

 

Job Duties

Essential Functions:
Faculty:

  • Serves as a member of the faculty and as such is expected to engage in teaching, service, and scholarship
  • Teaches courses as assigned and within faculty workload guidelines
  • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours

Department Leadership and Advocacy

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the faculty/instructors under their charge.
  • Represents the department within the college and community.
  • Administers college policies
  • Advocates and justifies department needs to assure the continuation and development of the program.
  • Plans course sequence for each semester and coordinates faculty/instructor teaching assignments, including processing faculty, load and compensation documentation.
  • Facilitates program review and accreditation, as appropriate.
  • Oversees faculty/instructional staff in maintaining vocational credentials.
  • Participates in the CCCS Discipline team
  • Coordinates CTE Advisory Committee
  • Conducts department meetings
  • Facilitator between faculty and administration, and disseminated information to faculty with the department on all campuses as appropriate
  • Maintains open communications among faculty, staff, and students

Supervision Responsibilities

  • Supervise, evaluate and direct faculty/instructors within the PCC Faculty Evaluation and Performance Process in collaboration with Division Dean
  • Conduct annual performance review of instructional staff
  • Monitors teaching effectiveness and student learning for faculty/instructors
  • Coordinates development of each semesters schedule, and facilitates faculty course selection and teaching responsibilities for each term/session
  • Works with faculty and staff to resolve issues that cannot effectively be solved at a more local level
  • Address student concerns, complaints, and related issues in a healthy, student focused but policy guided approach
  • Delegate responsibility as appropriate and necessary
  • Consults with the division dean concerning performance of staff within the department

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Facilitates curriculum development, review, and revision based on assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Proposes new curriculum via curriculum committee, discipline teams and advisory committee.
  • Works with faculty/instructional staff to review course syllabus, textbooks and other materials to maintain the quality of course content and instruction.

Student Recruitment and Advising 

  • Represent and promotes program student recruitment activities.
  • Coordinates the involvement of faculty in their role and advising responsibilities.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Develops and manages prior learning assessments (PLA).
  • Maintains and recruits transfer agreements to Universities.

Professional Recruitment

  • Coordinates recruitment of faculty/instructional staff in accordance with CCCS/PCC Policy and Procedures
  • Assesses candidates with due diligence; recommendations, personal interviews, reference checks and examinations of academic credentials

Budget Development and Administration

  • Develop and manage the department budget with the oversight from the Division Dean
  • Coordinate the purchasing and maintenance of department equipment, supplies, and facilities
  • Manage all grants, and grant funding as appropriate
  • Manage auxiliary services and budgets as appropriate

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Serves on a minimum of one college committee or task force.
  • Participates in graduation
