Department/Division Purpose (brief description of main function):

The purpose of the TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Program, a federally funded grant for disadvantaged youth, is to provide students with a rigorous math and science curriculum in high school to encourage and enable them to successfully major in critically important science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines in college and succeed in a program of postsecondary education.

The Upward Bound Math & Science Recruitment and Retention Coach focuses on recruitment and retention of program participants. This individual also serves as a part of the Upward Bound Math & Science professional team and helps plan and deliver leadership, career, college preparatory and cultural enrichment workshops, campus tours and activities that help prepare UBMS participants to succeed in college. Travel to off campus sites will be necessary.

 

Job Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Specializing in the recruitment and retention efforts for the TRIO UBMS STEM grant by coordinating presentations and providing information on program requirements to target school principals, counselors, teachers, students and parents in order to actively recruit and retain program participants for the program.  Recruitment and retention strategies also include presentations during Program Orientations and to other external grant partners, community organizations, churches and other groups as needed to ensure the grant specified number of students served is met.  Actively research best practices and new strategies to ensure participant retention in program
  • Directly responsible for the initiating and coordinating of student advising process for all new and continuing TRIO UBMS STEM students. Provides thorough academic advising services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program with creation of individualized career and academic (ICAP) plans, portfolios, and college curriculum plans to ensure on time high school graduation, guided pathway curriculum, transfer plans for post-secondary completion, and referral support services for all UBMS participants. Advises and educates parents and students during semester parent/student conferences on student progress, program requirements, student's academic goals while evaluating student's academic history, college ready assessments (ACT, SAT and Accuplacer), and academic progress via transcripts on a continual proactive basis.
  • Initiates, prepares and maintains accurate accounting records for all expenditures requested in for advisement, recruitment and retention and service learning activities provided to UBMS participants and ensures that guidelines outlined in the federal TRIO program regulations, EDGAR, OMB Super Circular, and procedures set by CCCS and PCC are strictly followed.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and serves as staff chaperone and supervisor during college campus visitations, service learning and cultural enrichment activities/events provided for program participants throughout Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.  Travel to off campus sites with week-long, weekend and overnight stays required.
  • Assist with and support outreach to grant stakeholder programs to eliminate duplication of services to ensure participants have access to additional opportunities to enhance knowledge and skill levels.
  • Responsible for the coordination and facilitation of all STEM workshops and seminars for all participants to gain skills and knowledge in the areas of STEM career fields, leadership, character development, financial literacy, lifelong learning, cultural diversity, transfer and articulation agreements, career planning, and college preparation.   Develop curriculum and deliver classroom instruction on these topics.  Assist with the planning, coordinating and facilitation of all academic and summer STEM program components for participants as outlined in grant and any other duties as required by management.
  • Directly supervises, trains and evaluates performance of student and non-student hourly employees including instructors, tutors and/or front office staff.
  • Establish, coordinate and maintain contact with all area high schools, colleges, universities and community partners building strong, positive working relationships and partnerships to effectively provide intentional and intrusive advising services for all UBMS participants.    Moreover, this function requires UBMS Recruitment/Retention Coach to stay apprised of best practices, strategies, and skillsets required to effectively recruit and retain UBMS participants.
  • Work with TRIO department staff to assist with the interview, evaluation and selection of qualified participants for the program.  This includes preparation of all academic documentation from the Banner Student Information System, analysis, and certification of this information to help determine UB student’s eligibility for entrance into the program as mandated in EDGAR and the Federal Register for TRIO programs.
  • Manages grant data bases by entering student and program advising data into the Student Access database.   Assists with the longitudinal data collection for reporting in the Annual Performance Report for submission to the United States Department of Education for all current and prior participants.  Prepares and presents monthly statistical student and program data for staff meetings and quarterly reports for Grant Partner Steering Committee reporting purposes and real-time decision making.
  • Active participation in community or professional organizations in support of TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Program’s students, parents, objectives and partnerships, such as but not limited to, Grant Partners Steering Committee, MYLIFE, STEM Advisory Council, President’s Leadership Program, TRIO Student Advisory Council and TRIO Parent Advisory Council.
  • In conjunction with the grant partner, manages the TRIO Upward Bound communications and communications club and all activities associated with the club
  • Active membership and participation in TRIO professional organizations: TRIO Alliance of Pueblo, Association of Special Programs in Region Eight (ASPIRE), and Council for the Opportunity in Education (COE) to gain knowledge of best practices and participate in trainings and workshops.
  • Volunteer on college or CCCS committees to ensure alignment of services provided, avoid duplication of effort and embrace PCC's Promise and culture of continuous quality improvement in all areas of the college.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Active membership and participation in TRIO professional organizations: TRIO Alliance of Pueblo, Association of Special Programs in Region Eight (ASPIRE), and Council for the Opportunity in Education (COE) to gain knowledge of best practices and participate in trainings and workshops.
  • Volunteer on college or CCCS committees to ensure alignment of services provided, avoid duplication of effort and embrace PCC's Promise and culture of continuous quality improvement in all areas of the college.
