MAP Center Navigator
Description

The My Advancement Plan (MAP) Center Navigator will advise students and interact with students’ families in English and/or Spanish ensuring they develop a MAP (an online individualized academic plan with clear educational, co-curricular, and career goals) and meet key checkpoints while at Lamar Community College (LCC). The full-time Navigator will help students tie coursework and co-curricular activities to career and transfer goals.  In addition to advising, the Navigator will work as part of a team to enhance student motivation, educate students about options, and facilitate tracking of student progress toward achieving MAP goals.
 
This program is principally funded through a five-year (October 2018-September 2023) U.S. Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions Grant. It is the intention of the college to retain the MAP Center Navigator at the conclusion of the grant. The Title III Strengthening Institutions grant will support Lamar Community College’s effort to increase student success while strengthening the college and its communities. This position is contingent upon continued Title III funding.

Duties Include:

  • Advise students one-on-one to develop individualized student academic plans (MAP) with clear educational, co-curricular and career goals.
  • Track student progress toward meeting career goals, helping students coordinate this plan with existing and new career resources as well as participation in co-curricular activities.
  • Identify barriers to success and connects students to resources and support services including financial aid, mentoring and tutoring.
  • Facilitate college enrollment and registration.
  • Foster motivation and help students develop skills needed for persistence and college completion, scheduling interventions if needed
  • Apply culturally-responsive advising principles and practices
  • Work with faculty advisors for a seamless transition to faculty advising for students.
  • Collect data on student participation, performance and outcomes for reports.
  • Other related duties, as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling or related area
  • Professional bilingual proficiency in Spanish
  • Minimum of three years’ experience advising students in an academic or student support setting
  • Knowledge of advising practices that support high-risk student population and non-traditional students
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a community college, and the needs of both traditional and non-traditional students
  • Strong mentoring and communication skills. Attitude of optimism with ability to inspire confidence

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Familiar with proactive advising methods, individualized advising plans, and the incorporation of career development and co-curricular experiences into the advising process
  • Experience working in an educational setting with diverse student populations
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a community college and the needs of both traditional and non-traditional students
